Most cinephiles know the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte for having designed the ballet costumes in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. Fashion lovers know Rodarte for having broken out a few years ago with their Japanese manga and Ozu-film inspired Spring 2008 RTW collection. Since then their visibility and talent has grown with each collection and red carpet wearers like Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst. I have been a huge fan of theirs since that aforementioned collection, and this year they presented a collection inspired by--of all things--Terrence Malick's film Days of Heaven. What a reference point! Although the film has been a fashion reference point before, what the Mulleavy sisters do with the silhouettes, fabrics, and tone of the film is exceptional. The sisters are known for their workmanship and this collection featured their own quilting and knitting, which added a wonderful layer of authenticity onto the clothing and the Nebraskan reference point. Some of my favorite looks:
Fantastic stuff. Now I'm just dying of excitement for Marchesa's new collection which I will SURELY be featuring on this blog when the photos are released!
